What is an ‘Autism Pride’ Card?

The government of Dubai has allocated special preferential parking spaces throughout the Emirate for people with disabilities. They have also installed ramps to ease wheelchair and mobility access, and adapted rest-rooms for disability access in every new facility.

However autism is a disability that is not immediately visible. The problems associated with it also cannot be solved by merely implementing physical aids and adapting infrastructure. Society needs to come together and support parents and care-givers so that those with autism can be taken out to public places with ease.

The Autism Pride Card provides the holder with free products and services, discounts, promotions and offers in Dubai to help people (and children in particular) on the autistic spectrum integrate in society with greater ease.

What is the purpose of the card?

Autistic children enjoy the same outings, cinema experiences, treats, play areas and snacks as other children. The fear that care-givers have is that their autistic child might have a fit or meltdown half way through these experiences. Outings can thus become tiresome and expensive for care-givers; hence they reduce the number of them or discontinue them entirely.

This could be counterproductive for the condition since interaction with others is often the best therapy for them and integration into society teaches people on the spectrum social behaviour.

• Free refreshments or desserts
• Free passes or free rides in play areas
• Discounts in restaurants
• Treats or discounts in salons or stores
• Free entrance to parks, amusement parks and water parks

Who can apply for the Card?

Any person diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum (medical documents must be provided as proof) will be given a card free of charge.
